Welcome New Chair - Academic Excellence, Derrick Hann

Please join us in welcoming Derrick Hann as our new Chair, Academic Excellence (based in Arviat). Derrick will be assuming is duties on August 1st 2018 and will lead the development and operations of the college’s Centre for Teaching and Learning. He will also play an instrumental role in the operationalization of our new taxonomy.

Born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Derrick has worked in post-secondary education in various positions for more than twenty-five years and is passionate about teaching, learning and education. He has lived throughout Canada in Halifax, Calgary, Regina, Toronto and has worked in the UK, Japan, Czech Republic and most recently in Doha, Qatar.

His most recent position was Coordinator, Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) at College of the North Atlantic - Qatar (CNA-Q), a branch campus of the provincial polytechnic college of the government of Newfoundland and Labrador located in the State of Qatar in the Middle East. Derrick lead a professional development and faculty support unit that identified, developed and facilitated ongoing professional development for all instructional faculty members in order to foster best practices in teaching and learning throughout the college, country and the region.

As a Program Development Coordinator for more than 7 years with CNA-Q, Derrick was responsible for managing both credit and non-credit program/curriculum development and revision projects across various academic schools. His experience also includes being a teacher and instructor for more than 15 years in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and academic preparatory studies for adult college and university learners in Canada, Europe and Asia.

Derrick holds a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Leading and Managing Organisations, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), a Canadian teacher certification in addition to a number of other certifications and qualifications in group facilitation, instructional development, curriculum development (DACUM), information technology, project management and effective communication.
