Completion of a milestone for the Kivalliq Campus Student Housing Initiative
Rankin Inlet, Nunavut (April 30, 2026) – Nunavut Arctic College (NAC) and Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC), in partnership with Pewapun Construction Ltd. and the Atoskiwin Training and Employment Centre of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, marked the completion of the Kivalliq Campus Student Housing Initiative with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Rankin Inlet.
On March 26, 2026, a guided tour of the newly completed duplex took place at the Sanatuliqsarvik Trade School, bringing together community members and partners to recognize this milestone.
The initiative includes three duplexes, for a total of six student housing units. One duplex is now complete, while the other two remain under construction. The ribbon-cutting ceremony recognized the completion of the first unit and the continued progress of the project, helping to address the urgent need for student housing in the region and supporting learners attending Nunavut Arctic College.
“Investing in student housing helps remove barriers to education and supports our mandate to strengthen communities and expand opportunities for Nunavummiut,” said David Akeeagok, Minister responsible for Nunavut Arctic College. “This project advances the Government of Nunavut mandate by pairing safe, stable housing with skills training that helps learners succeed and supports workforce development across the territory. By supporting community development, building local capacity, and empowering youth to pursue careers in the trades, we are helping students develop the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in Nunavut’s workforce.”
“This project shows what can be achieved through Nunavut-led solutions and practical partnerships. Ensuring training opportunities exist in Nunavut is an important part of meeting our housing goals. By turning the construction site into a classroom, we create opportunities for young Nunavummiut to build the skills needed in communities across the territory. This is exactly the kind of approach we want to keep building on,” said Cecile Nelvana Lyall, Minister responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corporation.
The initiative reflects an integrated approach that supports local training and employment, while creating safe and stable housing options for students and their families.
